I Knit, therefore I am. There’s other stuff involved as well but it’s too boring to mention…

New Knitting Obsession – Rose Tyler Scarf

Posted by KTC on 20 August, 2007

So help me, I am determined to make this scarf.

In the 2005 series Doctor Who episode Boomtown, Rose can be seen wearing a (knitted? crocheted?) scarf. I am going to make it my mission to either find the pattern or reverse engineer the damn thing once I get the DVDs.

I wrote to the BBC but, sadly, they’ve got nothing in the way of information about it. *sigh*

I will not let this stop me. *gerbil growl*

That’s definitely knit – in the lower left you can see the wrong side of the work, and it’s the characteristic knitting wrong side. It looks like the holes were created with YOs, and that it was worked on large needles. Good luck!

Try posting on craftster.org they are so smart there and do reverse engineering quite often. I’d been eyeing that scarf too, I wish you luck!

  3. Thanks Emilee!

Knittingnoob, I will definitely do that. I am still trying to figure out what yarns were used but it’s possible that someone with more experience might know.

Either way, I’m still trying to hunt down the maker to ask them.

Ohh i cant knit for my life but now i actually want to learn! thankx

  5. Hi Rose,

It’s easier than it looks. I thought it was hard as well when I first started a little over a year ago. As I practiced and got better at it, I liked it a lot more. Now you can’t get the needles out of my hands.

….guess what everyone is getting this holiday season? Muahahahaha!

I was obsessed with finding a pattern for that scarf too! I also emailed BBC and they said they just bought it at a shop and didn’t have a pattern. I made a website and talked with some other knitters and came up with a pattern. Enjoy.

  7. D’you know, I saw the what looked like same scarf on Inspector Lynley Mysteries? The victim in Season 5, Episode 3 – ‘Chinese Walls’ wore it on the night of her murder.

It freaked me out when I saw it. Oddly, I was more freaked out by the scarf than by the murder itself…I must seriously be into that scarf. 0_0

If it was the scarf, that thing is apparently bouncing from one BBC programme to the next. :p

I was searching for a pattern too and found this one: http://zbyszkoknits.livejournal.com/924.html

  9. Thanks CelticDancer! I’m reading all of the sites sent and internalizing. I’ve got to learn some of the stitch patterns. I’m only recently getting ribbing (as of yesterday) and I’ve still got a long way to go.

    I’m determined. *gerbil growl*

I still would like to know just what that yarn is though.

Have you been able to find a crochet version of the scarf at all? I’m not a knitter (not yet, anyway) and I was really hoping to maybe find a pattern or at least a similar crochet version of it to make.

    Hi Janice,

I haven’t been able to find anything in regard to crocheting patterns for the scarf. My main thing is knitting and…*hangs head in shame*… I’m still in the process of learning techniques such as YO, etc.

I’ve also been trying to hunt down the yarn used to make it. It would be nice to have that even if only for projects other than “The Scarf”.

Oh I know what you mean! The yarn used for the scarf was beautiful. I haven’t been able to find out what yarn it was either, but it sure is quite lovely. I’ve heard people tried it with Noro yarn and got a similar result for it. I just can’t think of which Noro it was. Yea, one night I was so desperate to try and find that same yarn that I spent the whole night online looking through an online yarn shop and matching EVERY single bit of yarn to the picture of Rose with the scarf. That was sure a night well spent. *sarcasm* Lol. I found a bunch that were quite similar, but it’s hard to tell which could be it for sure.

And as for the crochet pattern… I’m a simple crocheter with dreams of knitting someday. Lol. Actually, I plan to learn sometime soon… most likely this summer. –If all goes as it should. :) But yea, I was considering trying to convert the knit pattern to crochet, but that seems a bit beyond my reach. And if worse comes to worse, I’ll probably just knit the darn thing once I learn how. Lol.

You’re talking with someone who’s repeatedly written directly to the BBCs Doctor Who AND Wardrobe department in the hopes that someone will take pity on me.

    Alas, not yet.

I do know that it’s a part of the “stock” wardrobe though. I’m not giving up until I find that yarn and/or that scarf LOL.

While I’m looking, I might as well do the traditional DW scarves to pass the time. It’ll keep my thoughts occupied at least.

To help in your quest for knitting, might I suggest The Knitting Help site and Queer Joe’s Knitting blog? I’ve been learning A LOT from both sites.

I think I’ve found it!! Or something close to it, at least. The yarn, I mean.

Check out Noro “Chirimen” Yarn. On Yarn Market the color is #8, not sure of it’s real name. It looks VERY similar to the scarf.

  15. KTC said

Wow, what beautiful colors. I can’t wait until I’m off of this self-imposed restriction.

It does look very similar though. Have you tried it to see how it comes together?
