While looking at the news yesterday, I came across the tail end of a story regarding people in Howard County dumping their cooking oil down drains. This apparently has been causing the storm drains to back up with sewage, resulting in spills in local waterways. (More)
As I watched the video shots of the spills, I could think only one thing: How many cars could run on that? Used cooking oils can be converted to Biodiesel. (More, More, More, More, and More)
Why in the living heck are people just throwing it all away when they could use it to fill up? It’s too bad no one’s worked out a way to process the sewage itself and use it as an energy resource…
I supose the positive side of the news lately regarding fuel prices is the upsurge in Public Transportation riders. I’d wondered where all those people on the MARC Train had come from. One day, I’m riding the train between Baltimore and Washington DC and everyone can get a window seat. Gas prices go up and next thing you know, its ‘Standing Room Only’. Bad for getting a seat with a view but good overall for the environment. Given that people are effectively stickin’ it to ‘Da Man’, I can live with not having a more direct view of the passing scenery.
