Mir Ist Kalt and Other Quandaries

Wow, I’ve been away for some time. Well, “away” is the wrong word. Preoccupied is more appropriate.

I’ve had my plate pretty full during these past few months. Between making the Hobbes dolls, knitting for myself, crocheting for charity, sustaining my relationships with my guys, and learning German, I’ve barely had time to eat, let alone do anything else.

The Hobbes dolls are slowly being made. As I get a visit from one of the recipients, I complete one. It isn’t due to boredom that these are getting done so slowly but more due to preoccupation with the other subjects. I also may need more orange yarn. I think I’ve bitten off more than I can chew but I’m still, stubbornly, trying to make it all work out for the best.

Mir Ist Kalt is my new blue sweater, though I am not directly knitting on it right now. This is due to the lack of a long enough circular knitting needle with which I may try the sweater on as I knit. The pattern I’m using is by Tin Can Knits and its called Flax. I’m hoping to get my new 60 inch needles by the thirteenth and get back to knitting on that same day. I am presently still knitting the yoke stitches.

Between Duolingo, books from the Library, my translation dictionary, and (to a lesser extent) Memrise, I’ve been really drilling the German language into my head. Thankfully, unlike past adventures with languages, this time, it has been sticking. I have only missed three days out of seventy-seven. I consider that a pretty good record. I just hope I can keep up the pace and continue to learn. I want to take classes at some point but I am struggling to find the money. I am hoping that one of those legendary Medical/Clinical/Research studies that pay a lot of money will present itself to me so I can test my abilities and, hopefully, grow in my learning capacity.

2017-09-10 14.06.41

Charity wise, I am so far behind. While I am on hiatus for the sweater, I am crocheting this scarf. When I am crocheting the Hobbes dolls, to give myself a break, I plan on crocheting these scarves. When I am in the street, running various errands, I am meant to crochet still more scarves. In a few weeks, I hope to have at least twenty of them to turn in to the charity contact person, if not more. My deadline for this particular project is the end of October. At present, I have one completed and this pink one on the hook. Sisyphus is pushing that boulder uphill in my mind. Nevertheless, I am determined to do this.

Not only will I be giving to charity, but I’ll also be clearing my yarn of acrylics, thus enabling me to fulfill my promise of using only natural fibers in my knitting and crocheting. It’s also one hell of a destash if I can get it done like I want to.

NaNoWriMo is getting closer and I am still no closer to an idea for this year’s story. I am thinking of delving into my own life either past or present, but I’m wary of digging up emotional landmines I’d rather not deal with. So, I think, if nothing comes to me, I will be delving, just for the sake of change and challenge. Heck, it would be cheaper than therapy. Rolling on the floor laughing

Until the next time, have a safe and fantastic journey around the Sun. Take care, my friends. Rolling on the floor laughingRed heartRainbow

Random Sunday Updates

Hello Everyone. It has been some time since I last posted here. I have been, admittedly, a bit busy, of late. Instead of focusing on Facebook and goofing off online, I’ve been focusing on myself and developing my potential for future application in the meatspace. I’ll just run through a few of the highlights here, shall I?

OK Cupid

I have finally gone through on the longstanding promise of deleting my OK Cupid account. The site just stopped being fun. When it first started, there were all kinds of bells and whistles to make you want to stay on the site for hours. Now, it’s more and more like the other sites. On top of that, the avalanche of crude messages I received should have been enough to make me leave a lot sooner than a few weeks ago. Had it not been for the deluge of bad messages, I might have connected with a truly wonderful person I exchanged e-mails with in 2010 a lot sooner than recently. It’s a long story, possibly for another time and another post. Suffice it to say, I haven’t been this blissfully happy in quite some time.

The Departure of the Protégé

My Knitting and Crocheting Protégé is moving out of state in a few weeks. Not like I got a chance to do more than get him fitted out in hooks and a few needle sets. I had plans for so much more but now, if we both have the time, it’ll have to be long distance and via Skype or something.

This leaves a vacancy for a Protégé in my life. I’m going to attempt to recruit the Maternal Parental for the role. She’s been showing an interest in the hook set I bought her years ago. Perhaps we could spend quality time together crocheting and knitting? Who knows? It would be a nice thing to have happen.

The Fitness

Up through to the present day, I’ve been focused on improving my health through diet and exercise. I’ve finally managed to make headway on this front. I’ve lost thirty-two pounds and several inches thus far. I’m now in smaller clothing, which is nice. I even managed to fit a dress I bought in 2011 that I was barely able to fit then. It’s loose on me now. My routine is pretty brutal during the week and much more forgiving during the weekends (to give my body a chance to rest). I’m hoping that I can maintain this level of activity for a while before ramping things up again for the next phase of fitness. A highlight was when I got in over 100,000 steps this past week.

The Container Gardens

The plants keep growing. After all, they’re living entities. Specifically the Mega Cherry Tomato in the Aerogarden. Since I last posted, some of the tomatoes have ripened and some have been harvested. They’re very tasty too.

In addition to the tomatoes growing amazingly well, I have an inflorescence in my house. One of my Snake plants has decided to put up a flower spike.

The Comestibles

Aside from the above pictured tomatoes, I had something of a treat a few weeks ago. A dear relative gifted half a bushel of the most delectable Maryland Peaches to the Maternal Parental and I. Below is an example Peach.

2016-08-30 19.47.36

So, of course, I had to make Peach Pie. It was practically a requirement that I do this in the name of Science, Asgard, and Loki. It may not have won the Great British Baking Show with its looks but it sure was tasty. *grin*

The Culling

In recent weeks, I’ve finally done the Mega Culling I’ve threatened to do for a while now. My books, my precious books. Some of them are up for grabs now. Some have already been re-homed. I hope they give many years of enjoyment to their new Humans.

A before and after of my bookcase:

2016-09-21 21.38.14

More books may be culled. The decision hasn’t been finalized yet.

The Old School Gaming

Ten years ago, I bought a six in one gaming set from Amazon, it includes a set of dominoes, a deck of cards, a Chess/Checkers board with pieces for both games, a Cribbage set, and a Backgammon set.

2016-08-23 22.36.28

I had bought this with the intention of spending quality time with people but, sadly, no one wanted to play. It’s all video games now. So, I’m going to teach myself to play these games, find video games for them, and play by myself. Then, when that glistening, shining moment arises where someone asks the $64,000.00 question of “Do you know how to play…” I’ll be able to say, “Yep”.

The Crafting

Finally, I can update the world, nay, Multiverse on the progress of these damned socks. The Rainstorm II Socks are Finished. Complete. Finito. My proof.

2016-09-25 01.17.57

It only took me from 19 February 2015 until 25 September 2016 to get them completed. As I stated previously on Instagram, this is not acceptable. The next pair of socks I start get finished within a month or I don’t get to keep them. Instead, they’ll go to the nearest Mens 9.5/Womens 11/43cm shoe size wearing person I can find. My knitting is fast enough to have finished these socks within a week of starting them, if not sooner. That’s with ample breaks to rest my finger from the brass needlepoint of my circular needles (Magic Loop knitting). Just because I was able to put it down repeatedly didn’t mean that I should have.

Anyway, onto the socks themselves. They’re very toasty warm and deliciously soft on my feet. The yarn was a dream to knit with and I’m really looking forward to making more socks in the other colorways of this yarn, which is Stroll Hand Painted from Knit Picks. The pattern is called Misti Sock Family and the pattern designer’s name is Kate Atherley.

Once I completed the socks, I decided to work on a crochet project for someone very dear to me. It’s something I’m presently working on actually. Once completed, it’ll be the second Amigurumi Adipose Baby I’ll have made but the first I’ve made in wool. Let me just say that, but for my cheap nature, if I could afford to work in wool all the time, I would. This project has been nothing short of luxurious on my hands. The wool was actually his request, so I thank him for requesting it. This pattern is called the Amigurumi Adipose and the pattern designer is Jennifer Christensen.

This is as far as I’ve gotten:

2016-10-01 22.37.06

All I have left to do is crocheting, stuffing, and attaching the feet before weaving in the ends. I hope to get this done in an hour or two.

NaNoWriMo 2016

I will be participating in National Novel Writing Month 2016. I have no idea what I’m going to write as of today. I suppose this makes me a “Pantser” until I come up with an idea? I still haven’t finished the novel from last year. Some day…

This year, I’m going to be a lot more basic with my characters, background, and storyline. I want to finish something tangible by the deadline. What I have from last year is okay, it’s just a lot of writing with more writing to come. I need something that’s going to be less War and Peace and more quick and easy read. It is October now. I really need to get myself in gear.

Okay, I think that’s it. My stomach is rumbling and I have a workout to get in, so have a fantastic day.

Flotsam Musings

NaNo may be over but revisions are coming up and I’m no further along in my writing than the last day. I really must take some time out of my days to write a few words. I also have the other story I promised to work on to look at again. Hopefully, I will get some of this completed and or at least worked on after I finish this doll I’m working on.

Time management skills just fly out of the window when one is enamored, I suppose. The very act of concerning oneself for another person’s well being is enough to disrupt the entire process of creativity. Still, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

On to other matters before I lose my train of thought in a puddle of love.

Pictured above is the first blooming I’ve seen on the second or lesser tomato plant in the Aerogarden of Hope. Both plants are getting very large and are filling in the space where the Jalapeno pepper plant once was quite nicely. I’ve already shaken the flowers up, so I should start getting (fingers crossed) tomatoes within a few week’s time.

All the other plants are growing very well as well. I’m teetering on the brink of buying another Aerogarden so I can have fresh herbs again. I really loved that and the Aerogarden Bounty looks like such an interesting model to have. The Maternal Parental also wants a lesser model Aerogarden so she can have fresh Kale.

I finally have the yarn for Sam’s Boba Fett amigurumi doll. I hope to get to making it today after I finish Mike’s Hobbes doll.

I’ve even managed to make The Maternal Parental a hat finally.

It’s hard to tell because I have it on a purple chair but it’s in that Claret yarn she picked out ages ago for her scarf and hat set. I’ve yet to make her the matching scarf but I will do before it gets cold. Lately, we’ve been having near 60 – 70 fahrenheit days. Not much call for a hat in that kind of weather.

Much to my chagrin, I still have yet to make my own stuff for Winter. This is getting ridiculous with how long it is taking me to get this done. I have a bunch of yarn for the task, so I’ll get to it ASAP. I don’t want to be freezing cold while everyone else has scarves, hats, and gloves on.

In the meantime, back to work. Later.

Shining Brightly In The Dark

A book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.

–Madeleine L’Engle

So, I have the beginnings of a book. It is nowhere near completion and I have more than the 50,000 words required for NaNoWriMo thus far. I validated on the 22nd of November. I’m dedicated to following this one through. This is the longest string of words I’ve put together in my life and it’s coherent. It’s solid. It’s pretty good actually. At least, I think so. As soon as I’m further along, I’ll update the PDF file and pass it along to my friend for his perusal.

One of my SOs asked me when it was going to be completed. I admit to being a bit peeved at the rush on the timetable. It’s not like there’s a deadline for me to write this. This book is for my own personal accomplishment in writing. As it stands, I am writing as quickly as I possibly can, as much as I can. For example, my plan is to do 6,500 words today, tomorrow, and Tuesday before giving myself a much needed break on Wednesday. I haven’t been sleeping like I should or doing things I normally would be doing in place of the writing. I’ve never felt this way before. It’s like something has smashed inside of me and opened the floodgates on the innate ability I have to write things. I love it. This feeling is exhilarating.

Waiting in the background for this novel to be completed are several projects and another story I need to write a continuation on. I wrote a story in 2006 and finally posted it to Adult-FanFiction and Literotica a little over a month ago with the title Unintentional Advances. The chief complaint about it has been that I didn’t flesh out one of the characters enough and that I didn’t give a less ambiguous ending. My intention with the story was mainly to write from the one character’s perspective, but I concur that more could have been said about the other character, so a revisit is warranted. The ambiguous ending was intended to give the reader a chance to make up their own story (hopefully a nice one) for the two characters but, apparently, everyone wants me to write it out. I’m up to it. I just need to get back into the characters. I laid them to rest in 2006 when I wrote the story and only dusted it off to edit for publishing and give it a title (Thanks, Brandon, for your help with the title).

On the project front, I have an unfinished Hobbes head staring at me with its Darice button eyes. It’s for my friend on the occasion of his birthday in less than a month’s time. I also still have socks, a doily, a stole, a blanket, a Boba Fett, and a sweater to make. In addition to this, December is supposed to be the month I start the In Love With Color throw. I also, still, haven’t made my winter gear. So, I’m going to be quite busy over the next few weeks.

At some point during all of this, I may do a vlog. A long vlog too. Not a short, update on the Aerogarden or anything but a proper scripted vlog featuring things.

For now though, I need tea. Lots and lots of tea. Later.

Vampire Writing Hours

I’ve been so stressed out lately. I’m giving serious thought to inverting my schedule just so I can get some peace and quiet to write in. Apparently, it takes the passage of midnight for people to stop banging on the friggin’ front door or ringing the phone. Sometimes… *glare* …not even then will the noise stop.

The only writing I’ve gotten done is a story I’ve completed after nine years. It’s not for NaNoWriMo but it’s something I’ve been anxious about completing. I consider it done now at thirty-nine pages. Thanks to my friend, it has a title. I’ve put it up on a few sites, including my own InsaneJournal behind F-lock. I may put it up on another site a friend just told me about last night but, for that, I’ll have to go over it with a fine toothed comb for errors. I do that now but, as of now, it’s just me reading my writings. No Beta reader. I’ll just have to up my game of checking after myself. I did get positive feedback about it though. That’s something. Now, I just have to keep churning them out.

Finally have an appointment for the doctor to get this bronchitis checked out. I don’t have the strength or the patience to go to the offices with more open appointments available, so I’m waiting for the one in my area even though it’s got fewer available appointments and on a later date.

Speaking of appointments, I have an appointment to donate platelets in forty four days. This will be the first time I’ve been back in almost four years. Life and various tiny illnesses/injuries just kept getting in the way. Like this darn bronchitis. Hopefully, I’ll be in peak physical condition come my appointment time. I normally pull a high number too, whatever that means. I’ll remind myself to look up what that means. It’ll just be fun to be helping out again.

I’m also taking my buddy, Winky – the Blood Drop.

He’s a squeeze ball. I made him off of a pattern I found on Ravelry.

I’m getting sleepy now. So, I’m going to take a nap, so I can wake up at 1am my time to write. Later!

Celebrating Success

I am so not letting this illness get me down. Instead, I’m going to wax ecstatic about all the things growing in my room as well as the achievements I’ve accomplished.

First, an achievement.

Four chicken pot pies! If the swipes of tastings are anything to go by, they’re pretty tasty too. I wish I could eat some but they’re not for the household. They’re for the Maternal Parental’s brother and sister.

I would have included the Peanut Butter cookies I made along with them but…they sort of got eaten up. On well. Better luck next time.

In the realm of gardening, I’ve gotten a monster crop of Jalapeno peppers coming in (vlog coming tomorrow).

Also included is a little junior partner in the Equality Salsa Garden. Ladies, Gentlemen, Multiforms, and Variations Thereupon, I present to you the first developing tomato in my garden.

In the realm of crafting, I completed one last project, the little Yummy Yoda, prior to the beginning of NaNoWriMo prep for me.

Not bad for a first go at the pattern. I’m going to get some more DK weight yarn in various colors to see how well I can do on making the other figures.

The other projects I was working on prior to the beginning of NaNoWriMo Prep will just have to wait forty five days on my desk.

Speaking of the writing… I have my Novel title, summary and brief excerpt up on the NaNoWriMo site. I have absolutely nothing else except for a randomly written filling of the world of my story. I live in hope though as I have fifteen more days in this month and another whole month in November to write this out. I’m trying not to procrastinate, like I normally do, but it’s only making me do just that.

I’m going to make a revised schedule for myself tomorrow. Either that, or stick to the one I have up on my wall. I still have loads more research to do and characters to create. Wish me good luck.

All By My Lonesome

I’m very proud of myself. I’ve managed to put together my desk all by myself. I carried it up to my room a piece or two at a time and then I struggled with it for six hours until it was all put together. I even deconstructed the old desk and took it downstairs.

Sisters really are doing it for themselves.

In addition to this, I finally managed to get the book and kit I’ve been desperate for. The journey to getting this crochet kit has been long and hard. I found out a few things in the process of receiving this:

  1. Some of my neighbors are thieves.
  2. Even my favorite delivery carrier is capable of incompetency.
  3. There is actually worse out there than my formerly least favorite carrier.
  4. I can crochet even when I’m super tired.

Now that I have the kit, I’ve been studying, practicing, and making some of the figurines. My first project from this book is Yoda. As of today, he is unfinished because my exhausted body finally crashed on me yesterday. I’ll be working on him again as soon as I eat something.

Once he’s finished, he’s going to my friend Sylvain.

Then, as soon as I get the yarn from Knit Picks, I’m making Boba Fett for my friend Sam.

My body is still so sore and covered in bruises and scabs from putting this desk together. I look on this pain and temporary marking as proud battle scars for a job well done.

On a similar vein, the bed I was so anxious to get may be too big for my room. I was doing the measurements across the Wall of Inspiration and, even if I tried to, it wouldn’t fit comfortably. So, the concept of a bed is right out.

Oh well.

My Aerogarden peppers are super producing right now. Every time I look in on the plant, I see more and more Jalapenos with more and more leaves and flowers falling. I might tweak with the feeding a little bit to see if I can get the plant to retain more of the flowers for fruit production.

The tomatoes are almost the same height at the pepper plant. I’m really hoping to get a new Aerogarden once I get rid of the sewing table and machine. That way, I can have one Aerogarden dedicated to pepper production and another dedicated to tomato or herb production. Oh, who am I kidding? Tomatoes. I’m determined to lick this tomato growing.

Last but certainly not least, NaNoWriMo. I have three more days until I’m fully dedicated to preparing for this upcoming pain festival in November. I have the beginnings of a story. I’ve run it by a few friends and they all say that it seems original. I’m just hoping the melding of my old unfinished stories and this main story go smoothly. I think I’m going to spend the next two days writing character sheets or something.

I really need to eat something now. Later.
