Peppers and Socks and Herbs…

Oh My!

An abundance of Sweet Pickle Organic Pepper seedlings. I relented and put them under the light hood of the Aerogarden of Serendipity as I’d been threatening to do for weeks now. I’ve noticed vast improvement in the short time they’ve been under the lights. This is the third day and they’re already a nice, dark green color and all straightening up.

I’m going to give them a few more inches to grow before I mercilessly cut the very tips from them. Bwhahahahaha. No seriously, it’s a good way to get an abundant harvest of peppers out of a plant. It causes the plant to take on a compact, bushy habit and produce more flowers. More flowers (if they’re pollinated) equals more fruit. At least, I hope it gives me fruit.

My progress on the socks. I’m about one quarter of the way through knitting the feet. Over the past month, I haven’t been able to touch this project owing to so much stress and grief but, lately, I’ve been doing pretty well at it. When I finish this, I’ll make another attempt at the Boba Fett amigurumi figurine before (hopefully) moving back to the Maternal Parental’s crocheted cardigan.

The Project list at present:

  • João’s Hello Kitty Hat (Completed)
  • Blodeuwedd The Hat for me
  • Little Boy Blue Blanket
  • Shimmer Stole
  • Handschuhe Times Two: Bruce’s Gloves
  • Cosmos Doily Madness: Doily Three
  • Rainstorm II Socks (Loading…)
  • Child-bearer’s Cardigan
  • Boba Fett Amigurumi Doll (Loading…Daylight hours)
  • Baby Groot
  • Rose Doily #804
  • Be a Friend/Have a Heart Shawl(Completed)
  • In Love With Color Throw
  • Bigger on the Inside Shawl
  • Gloves for myself
  • A scarf for myself
  • Villimarjatar Shawl

One more picture and then I’m going to go read my book. Right now, I’m reading Darwin’s Origin of Species. Anyway, this is a pre-cutting picture of the Aerogarden of Serendipity taken 30 May 2016.

As you can see, this is a forest of basil. I’ve cut it back but it is only a matter of time before it grows back to wacky proportions.

I think, in future, I’m going to grow just about anything but the Gourmet Herb garden. I love growing Peppers and Tomatoes, so perhaps I should try those out a bit more?

Thanks for reading. Have a fantastic day.

Happy Birthday To Me

Hey, I’m almost thirty-five years old. Wow. Anyway, to the posting.

For some time now, I have been unable to sleep without a lot of effort. This has proved exhausting to my life and my schedule. So exhausting that, paradoxically, I have frequently gone days without adequate sleep. I’m not sure what has been causing this but I am hoping it will go away soon. My pdoc prescribed 50mg of diphenhydramine for this issue and…it didn’t work. There I was, in bed all night long, staring at the backs of my eyelids, wishing for some kind of intervention that would give me a good night’s rest.

I wasn’t worried about anything.

I wasn’t agitated.

I wasn’t upset.

I just couldn’t sleep for some reason.

My sleep issues had gotten to the point where they’d affected my writing abilities, my knitting and crocheting abilities, my physical health, my coordination and fine motor skills in cooking. Imagine being sleep deprived while trying to work with a sharp knife, a heated stovetop, or a boiling hot pot of water? Yeah, my lack of sleep was a detriment to myself and others after a while.

The one thing I could still do was screw up my vision to focus, barely. So, I read books: both eBooks and Treebooks in my possession until my brain didn’t want to take in more information. Once the overload was completed, I took my meds, went to bed and…after two and a half hours, fell asleep for two blocks of sleep totaling eight hours and forty seven minutes. Yay.

As of right now, I’m still more than a bit shaky but, as you can see, I am writing again. Hopefully, with more sleep and time to recover, I can work on those stories and crafting projects of mine.

Speaking of books and media. I think it’s time for another cull. I’m taking out the books with dated information, gleaning what I can from them before sending them for recycling if possible. The movies, I’m going to view them once more (the unwanted) before donating them to charity or selling them. After all, I do have a challenge on Goodreads to read at least fifty books before the end of the year. This seems like a good way to do it.

On the Aerogarden front, the Aerogarden of Serendipity continues to amaze me.

This is representative of thirty three days of growth. I have cut all visible plants back several times and they just keep on growing like they’re Kudzu or something. The Genovese Basil is particularly scary…I mean amazing as I cut it back to nothing more than a few leaf tips less than ten days prior and it grew back in record time. It is now overtaking the “Thai” Basil, pushing aside the Mint and shading the Cilantro. I had to raise the Light hood a bit to accommodate it.

I did have to get replacements for two pods. The Chives, well, to be honest Chive, died on me. The Cilantro never sprouted. So, I am now waiting for these replacements to grow. I hope they do. My room normally smells pretty good but, right now, it smells extra lovely. It’s very fragrant and smells of Basil, Mint, and Dill.

Due to my lack of coordination, I haven’t done much in the way of crocheting. I hope to change that in the next few days as my strength returns.

Thank you for reading. Have a great evening.

Expanding My Territory

2016-02-22 21.18.17

I am finally making moves to getting more growing space. In my community, there are garden plots available for rental for as low as $20USD per year. I’m not sure as to the specifics beyond that but, if this is still accurate, you’re reading the words of someone who is going to seize this opportunity as soon as it flies past her. For that princely sum, I would get a 4’ x 20’ plot to grow stuff in and a key to the growing space.

As much as I love the Aerogarden for snacks/light meals, it’s not sustainable for anything more than that in the long term. As it stands, I don’t have the room in my room to make a hydroponics system that could feed everyone I’d like to feed. So, with that door closed to me for the foreseeable future, my most feasible option is to get a soil based growing space and work from there. Heck, for the space advertised, I could feed a lot of people I’d like to feed. I’ve already promised some of the future harvest to one friend and another has automatic rights to the harvest as well because he’s such a good friend and has helped us tremendously. It’s only a question of getting the plot and supplies at this point.

It’s just a matter of getting the supplies to the growing space once I get it. I’m definitely going to grow tomatoes and peppers. While peppers might not need staking, the tomatoes I’d like to grow certainly will. For that, I’d need the supplies for a trellis system. I’d have no problems getting the stuff. I’d just need to figure out a way to get it to the site. I don’t know anyone with a truck, so I’d either have to walk it from where I live or hire someone. I really don’t think they’d let me on the bus with some of the supplies.

Seeds are no difficulty. In fact, they’re probably going to be one of the easiest things to acquire/transport. I’ll start them indoors here and then carry them to the grow site once they’re big enough to survive on their own.

In other news, I’ve frogged the sweater/cardigan I was knitting for my mother and replaced it with a crochet pattern. I’m really not in the mood to knit right now. Especially not something as large as a cardigan. So, I’ve opted instead for the New Beginnings Bulky Sweater. It’s a nice, comfortable looking cardigan pattern by Agnes Russell. The best part about this pattern is that I’ll probably end up using even more of this hideous (don’t like the color) pink yarn since it is a crochet pattern. I’m definitely hoping to get this pattern finished by July or earlier.

Another good thing about this pattern is that I can take it with me. While the other sweater was on circular needles, there was always the fear in me that the knitting would slip off of the needles. No such fears with crocheting.

So, this is my new nighttime pattern until I finish the Boba Fett. Then, it’ll be my all day pattern.

For now though, I need to sleep. I have been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately. Good morning, All.

Obrigada Shawl Completed

2016-02-14 17.48.19

Now that the shawl is completed, all I need to do is save up the money to send it off to its new Human.

Here’s another picture of my view right now aside from this computer. Every last one of these tomatoes is green. Just my luck.

2016-02-19 21.36.43

In truth, I’m very exhausted right now but I cannot get to sleep due to so many people deciding to call, message, etc. either me or this house. I’m really REALLY hoping to catch up on my sleep tonight.

Incidentally, I’m looking to make some more friends on NaNoWriMo’s website. If you’re planning to participate this year and you’re interested in being friends, please feel free to add me. I’m “xantedeschia” on that site as well.

As much as it was difficult to do, I really enjoyed the creative process that came about during NaNoWriMo.

Last and First

I think I neglected to post the last project I completed in 2015. It was a doll for a friend of mine on the occasion of his birthday. I got it finished just in time too. The pattern information page is available via Ravelry – Hobbes by Ann Stiver-Balla.

So now we come to the first completed project of 2016. I made this hat for another friend of mine. He likes Hello Kitty and, when I discovered this, I immediately wanted to make him a hat I had seen on Ravelry. So, this is my attempt at upsizing this hat for a fully grown human man. Luckily, we have the same head measurements, so it wasn’t difficult keeping track. Pattern information available via Ravelry – Hello Kitty Hat by Elizabeth Pardue.

So, as of this moment, I’m turning skeins of bright red yarn into cakes with my Yarn Ball winder for a future shawl project because it is too dark to work on my current distraction. I’m FINALLY making my friend Sam his Boba Fett doll. *fanfare*

You are probably wondering why I’m spending so much time crocheting and knitting when I could be…sleeping. Well may you ask. Due to recent health issues with my current medications (edema, racing heart, etc), I’ve had to stop taking the one that stops the panic inducing nightmares from happening. So. No sleep for me. At least, very little in the sleep department, most of which is fretful. Such is life, I suppose.

Completely changing the subject: The Aerogarden Tomatoes.

They’re really taking off, as you can see in the above picture. I offer you a few close ups of the fruiting.

So far, I’ve got at least ten tomatoes with a lot more flowers coming in everyday. I try to do a trim as needed, usually about once every other week or so. I’m trying to maintain the health of the plants and ensure they keep flowering and fruiting for me.

Well, I’ve got to get back to winding up this yarn into cakes. Take care and Be Well.

Handschuhe Times Three–Bruce’s Gloves

I’m finally back to working on this project. This second pair of gloves in a series of three is for my friend’s father, Bruce. I’m presently about five rounds into the cuffs of the gloves.

Thankfully, Bruce has hands about the same size as mine. So, there’s no need for wild speculation as to the measurements. I’ll just give about half an inch of extra for each finger in case he likes to pull his gloves on tightly.

I am particularly tired right now. I was up half the night for no purpose. I just couldn’t sleep for some reason. Annoyed

I would seriously consider going back to bed until I’d gotten some rest but I have an important appointment to keep today and I don’t want to miss it. It’s quite impossible to reschedule for it. So, up I am.

I’m most likely going to watch movies until my mind wakes up…or at least becomes coherent enough to start knitting again. My goal right now? Breakfast and tea. Later. BowlCoffee cup

Ugh, I mean Oh! Fitness Schedule Restart

While I’ve been moving over the past few months, I have not been truly working out as much as I’m capable. Today, that’s going to change. I’m restarting my Fitness schedule. I have personal (Hand written journal) reasons for doing this but I’ll definitely benefit from readopting the full regimen rather than doing sixty minute dancing and walking with occasional calisthenics.

So, to recap my 120 minute workout:

  1. Fifty Push ups
  2. Fifty Crunches
  3. Fifty Leg lifts
  4. Fifty Seated stretches (touching one set of toes at a time)
  5. Fifty Seated Bows (leaning forward as far as possible)
  6. Fifty Standing Toe touches
  7. Fifty Side Knee bends (each leg)
  8. Fifty Front Knee bends (each Leg)
  9. Fifty Squats
  10. Side downward punches (for the duration of two songs)
  11. Fifty Arm lifts (each arm)
  12. Arm Flexes (for the duration of two songs)
  13. Hip flexes (for the duration of two songs)
  14. March in place (for the duration of two songs)
  15. Air punches (for the duration of two songs)
  16. Neck exercises (for the duration of two songs)
  17. Jog in place (for the duration of two songs)
  18. Leg flexes (for the duration of two songs)
  19. Air cross punch (for the duration of two songs)

This is going to be in addition to dancing and walking.

While my knee is still a bit hypermobile, I no longer have body pains which interfere with me working out to this level. We’ll see how long this lasts. Ha.

On the supplement front, I’ve started taking a new vitamin. Don’t laugh at this. Ah, what the heck? I’m laughing myself. I’m taking Well at Walgreen’s Sodium Free Prenatal Multivitamin/Multimineral Suppliment. I’m mainly taking it for its vitamin compliment. Specificially, the iron level. You see, I have serious problems taking some iron supplements and I usually get dog sick when I do take them. So far, I’ve had minimal nausea with this one, so it looks like a winner. Hopefully, I can get my iron levels somewhere near normal levels for someone my age.

It would figure that, now that it’s time for me to get up, I’m now sleepy and yawning myself silly. Earlier this morning, when I was desperate for sleep, I couldn’t seem to go back under and now, I can barely keep my eyes open. I’ll take this as impetus to bid you all adieu. 🙂
