Mir Ist Kalt and Other Quandaries

Wow, I’ve been away for some time. Well, “away” is the wrong word. Preoccupied is more appropriate.

I’ve had my plate pretty full during these past few months. Between making the Hobbes dolls, knitting for myself, crocheting for charity, sustaining my relationships with my guys, and learning German, I’ve barely had time to eat, let alone do anything else.

The Hobbes dolls are slowly being made. As I get a visit from one of the recipients, I complete one. It isn’t due to boredom that these are getting done so slowly but more due to preoccupation with the other subjects. I also may need more orange yarn. I think I’ve bitten off more than I can chew but I’m still, stubbornly, trying to make it all work out for the best.

Mir Ist Kalt is my new blue sweater, though I am not directly knitting on it right now. This is due to the lack of a long enough circular knitting needle with which I may try the sweater on as I knit. The pattern I’m using is by Tin Can Knits and its called Flax. I’m hoping to get my new 60 inch needles by the thirteenth and get back to knitting on that same day. I am presently still knitting the yoke stitches.

Between Duolingo, books from the Library, my translation dictionary, and (to a lesser extent) Memrise, I’ve been really drilling the German language into my head. Thankfully, unlike past adventures with languages, this time, it has been sticking. I have only missed three days out of seventy-seven. I consider that a pretty good record. I just hope I can keep up the pace and continue to learn. I want to take classes at some point but I am struggling to find the money. I am hoping that one of those legendary Medical/Clinical/Research studies that pay a lot of money will present itself to me so I can test my abilities and, hopefully, grow in my learning capacity.

Charity wise, I am so far behind. While I am on hiatus for the sweater, I am crocheting this scarf. When I am crocheting the Hobbes dolls, to give myself a break, I plan on crocheting these scarves. When I am in the street, running various errands, I am meant to crochet still more scarves. In a few weeks, I hope to have at least twenty of them to turn in to the charity contact person, if not more. My deadline for this particular project is the end of October. At present, I have one completed and this pink one on the hook. Sisyphus is pushing that boulder uphill in my mind. Nevertheless, I am determined to do this.

Not only will I be giving to charity, but I’ll also be clearing my yarn of acrylics, thus enabling me to fulfill my promise of using only natural fibers in my knitting and crocheting. It’s also one hell of a destash if I can get it done like I want to.

NaNoWriMo is getting closer and I am still no closer to an idea for this year’s story. I am thinking of delving into my own life either past or present, but I’m wary of digging up emotional landmines I’d rather not deal with. So, I think, if nothing comes to me, I will be delving, just for the sake of change and challenge. Heck, it would be cheaper than therapy. Rolling on the floor laughing

I’ve Finally Found It…

My second language has finally been discovered. True, it took trepanning and a good deal of mental excavation to find it.

That language is…German. In truth, I should have known better. I did try to teach myself this language when I was ten. I have been practicing daily, about three hours per day, for thirty-seven days now. If you’d like, you can follow my progress on Duolingo. I’m now at the point where I can just barely make out what people are saying or what is written down. I definitely need to practice more if I’m going to be fluent but it is a good start.

I just need to find some Germans. Yoo hoo. Germans? Are you out there?

For that task, I’ve done the unbelievable. I’ve opened a new OKCupid account. This time around, my task isn’t really dating. It is finding a language pal/study buddy, so hopefully, I won’t have any trouble with anyone at all. Wishful thinking, I know. It is the seat of comedy but I’ve gotten rather a lot of matches to Dutch people. I don’t mind. It is a bit mentally rich carrying three languages around in my head at once in the name of politeness but you do what you do.

The friends I’ve made have gotten a hilarious chuckle out of this one. I’ve been learning a lot of German from the lyrics of Rammstein. Someone…might listen to them for more time in the day than they study on Duolingo. Angel

Those same friends suggested I expand my musical tastes, so they gave me a small listing of artists that they liked. I then combined their favorites with the Get Germanized listing of popular German music artists (YouTube Link) for later exploration. Some [who I won’t name] I really didn’t like, but others sound very good.

One group I’m going to be giving my ears next is Die Ärzte. They came up on multiple lists as highly recommended. Anyone out there have any other recommendations? Please, leave them in the comments. Smile

Aside from the above, it has been a summer of Plantar Fasciitis in both feet, crochet, strange propositions, lather, rinse, Repeat.

My Monopolized Time

Right in time for the holiday, I am sick. So, I am at home recuperating and trying desperately not to throw up.

When I’m not doing the above, I’ve been taking an inventory of what I’ve gotten accomplished thus far regarding my project list.

I am also on a few sites that claim to teach how to code…learning how to code. Right now, it has me going through the basics of HTML and CSS, which I already know, but I am determined to get into Programming languages soon. I’m determined to make this a side career for myself or even a main career. I just need to focus on my goals and not veer off-course.

No doubt this all seems very stressful. I’m having fun doing it but it is rather a lot to take on. As if this weren’t enough, I’m also taking up Korean, because I’ve wanted to for a very long time. I’m memorizing things semi-well even if I don’t spell the words as well as I should in review. I’ll get there though. Basically, my non-studying time is filled with a lot of studying. I’ll need to find another source for the language tutoring, as the one I’m using is holding back on the hard words. I’ll have to see if the Library has a language CD or something. I can also go to the local grocery store and pick up a newspaper for writing practice.

So, lots to do and only twenty-four hours in the day to do it all. Add onto this, the pattern writing/knitting design learning, plant management, taking care of the Maternal Parental, and taking care of myself as well as the household, and I have very little time left in the day. This has put a real dent in my social networking. I will try to log in once a week and, as always I will be available via messenger service.

Take care. Later.

I Live…

I took my first trip into the city by myself since becoming agoraphobic. Obviously, I’m writing this, so I survived. Yay!

It wasn’t as bad as my mind built it up to being. I was in a really busy area of downtown Baltimore city, surrounded by those people things, and I didn’t freak out at all. I made it to my appointment early and fulfilled my planned tasks admirably. As proven on my Instagram, I even rode the transit system all by myself.

I neglected to bring a project with me today though. Thankfully, I had my phone with its plethora of mental distractions. I learned languages and listened to music mostly during my sojourn. That was fun.

Next on my agenda is repotting some plants that desperately need repotting, continue in the knitting and crocheting saga that I have entangled myself in, clean up the disaster area also known as my room, vacuum and shampoo the carpet throughout the whole house, do the shopping for food and other sundries and ship off that which I have made already for others.

Now, for proof of my insanity: Clearly, I have lost my mind for even looking at this page when I have so many other things to do on my lists.

Speaking of insanity, I’m going to get more yarn from Knit Picks. It’s a vicious cycle, this yarn addiction is. You buy a bit and think that’s all you’ll get and before you know what’s hit you, you’re drawn in by its silky texture and cozy warmth. Then, you buy more and think you’ve got control, but you don’t. Not really. That’s when the hook is in. Oh yeah. That’s when they’ve got you. You try to shake it off and go cold turkey, then they go and offer you a $5 off promo code. So, now you’re going to spend the money you should be saving to go to the dentist on yarn. It’s a tragedy… o_O

I also ordered some reusable pie pans. I plan on making various pies with them. Right now, I’ve got a plan for turkey pot pie for the foreseeable future. I have vegetables for one, I just have to get vegetables for the second one. Mmmm, Okra… 🙂

I also ordered:

The Times of Harvey Milk (Hulu+ link)
The Princess Bride (for 1.99USD)
Spaceballs (also for 1.99USD)
Doctor Who – Series Eight (definitely NOT for 1.99USD)

I had ordered Guardians of the Galaxy but had to cancel it owing to my wanting to get the Maternal Parental something nice.

Regarding my post yesterday: So far, I haven’t gotten any of the negative responses or unfriendings I feared I’d get. Everyone has been loving and awesome. I love you all. You’re so cool. 🙂

Oh Hai There!

It’s me, your friendly neighborhood Loony.

I’ve got a date. Yeah, I can scarcely believe it myself.

He’s a seemingly normal, very nice gentleman who hasn’t tingled my spidey sense yet. That’s a positive. As you can probably tell from the calendar reference in the sidebar, we’re meant to go out this Friday. The details of where we’re going and for how long we’ll be gone are still unknown. Spontaneity isn’t my strong suit. I like plans and details. Especially with people who are effectively strangers to me. Hell, I don’t like surprises with my own friends and family. Yet, I’m willing to go on this date, regardless.

Why? I hear you and me both asking? I would have to say it’s because I genuinely like the guy. Had it been one of the numerous blind dates and not so blind dates my parents tried to set me up on, I would have been running for the hills. He doesn’t strike me as a horrible person or an evil person. He just seems like a nice guy.

Being no fool, I will, of course, take every precaution in my arsenal to ensure my safety. Call it my Linus Blanket, if you will. 😀

At the very least, my German can get a good practice with him at the level of basic friendship.

I did promise him I’d make him some gloves. I might also make him a hat which would require I buy yarn despite my yarn and book diet. I’m not getting much. Just six skeins of Lion Brand’s Superwash Merino Cashmere in the color he chose, black, and some Lion Brand’s Pound of Love to make a baby blanket for a recently acquired commission. The glove yarn, I’ll incorporate into my own accessory set, as it’s the third of my tricolor of black, purple and green. The blanket yarn, I’ll incorporate, as needed into my cardigan.

Deliciously hideous. 🙂

Okay, that’s enough rambling. Back to working on the doily. I’m currently on round 20. Thanks for reading. I hope it wasn’t too traumatic. :p

7am Exercise Routine

I have it on my schedule. Let’s be honest though, I don’t follow my schedule strictly…if at all. From 7am to 8am every morning, I’m supposed to be exercising. However, reality is somewhat different, in that I don’t do much of anything that time of the morning.

That’s about to change though. I was coming up the stairs, eight stairs, and I was huffing and puffing like the Big Bad Wolf. Good grief, I’m out of shape. I already knew I needed to exercise but so out of shape as to not making up eight stairs without trouble? No bueno.

Starting tomorrow, I’m going to do my morning exercise routine. I might even follow the rest of the schedule.

From 5am – 7am, I am meant to be writing followed by exercise at 7am and breakfast at 8am. Then Knitting Daily and Closer to Truth at 9am – 10am. I’m supposed to turn off the television and do two hours of Mathematics from 10am – 12pm. After that comes reading for pleasure from 12pm – 1pm, usually out of my Kindle but I could work this in favor of a further book cull. 1pm – 3pm is meant to be for Science. Then I take a TV break and look at cooking shows from 3pm to 5pm on the weekdays. After that, I’m supposed to turn the television off again for Linguistics practice from 5pm – 7pm. 7pm brings in the first time I’m supposed to be online all day. Ha ha. This is followed by a shower or bath and medication at 8pm.

Needless to say, I haven’t been following this schedule at all except for the waking up part. I’m doing absolutely nothing this Summer, so now is a good time to get into the swing of following it.

For the Science portion, I could eliminate my Watch Later backlog on YouTube and take care of that at the same time since I’ve got so many Science lectures saved for future viewing. For Mathematics, I have my old books. I need a better grounding in the basics before I start studying the higher stuff.

So, tomorrow, I’m going to get up at 5am and follow my schedule. For a change. Wish me luck. I’m going to need it.

Freedom of Day

Thank goodness, today is a free day. I don’t have anywhere to be, anyone to see or anything to do unless I want to do it. I’m spending the good majority of today with either Crocheting or Knitting in my hand while reading up on Python.

Right now, to aid in Crochet skills acquisition, I’m reading a book called Crocheting in Plain English by Maggie Righetti. So far, I like it. That is to say its going a good deal better than my Python skills acquisition.

As I practice, bits of what I learned at the Woman’s Industrial Exchange and through DVDs obtained at the Library are coming back to me. I’m still going to hammer it in even further with another review later today, once I’m more fully awake. I figure, if I apply myself equally to a recommended website, I should do equally well in learning Python.
